Adam Zampa has not been included in the Sheffield Shield team for the New South Wales match against Western Australia at the SCG because of the controversy surrounding his selection in the previous game. Nic Maddinson has had surgery on an injured finger and is doubtful for the BBL.
Matt Short will miss Victoria’s match against Queensland at the MCG because of a family wedding. Still, Jake Fraser-McGurk, who has been available for three of the previous five games this season, is expected to be called up to South Australia’s Shield team after being named in the XII to play Tasmania in Hobart.
However, after bowling 45 overs in the day-night match against WA last week—the most he has ever bowled in his professional career—Spencer Johnson could not play back-to-back Shield games due to soreness.
The Blues’ penultimate Shield match before the BBL break will be missed by Maddinson, Zampa, and Sean Abbott, who is with Australia’s Test squad. Billy 777 provides all cricket updates.
In a statement, New South Wales stated that Maddinson’s “return to play timeline will be assessed in due course” following his surgery on Thursday.
Although he signed a contract with the Sydney Thunder during the off-season, it appears unlikely that he will be heavily involved in the forthcoming BBL, which begins on December 15.
After the controversy surrounding his selection for the Blues’ previous Shield match against Tasmania, Zampa was left from the roster. Zampa reportedly only intended to play one red-ball game before the BBL to strengthen his case for the Sri Lanka Test tour.
Sam Whiteman, the captain of Western Australia, returns after missing the previous three Shield games due to a side strain. Due to a personal side injury, Ashton Turner, the stand-in captain, has been ruled out and may be unable to lead the Perth Scorchers into the BBL season.
Aaron Hardie is still out because of a quad problem that he has had since Australia’s September limited-overs tour of the UK. He is also working to be ready for the BBL to begin.
In addition to Ashton Agar’s (shoulder) and Cooper Connolly’s (finger) ailments preventing them from starting the BBL, the Perth Scorchers are also concerned about those two issues.
After participating in WA’s most recent game in Adelaide, Jhye Richardson was rested. However, Lance Morris was selected for his second consecutive Shield game.
After missing the match against South Australia, Brody Couch returns after taking 13 wickets at 29 in his first four games of the season, including a hat-trick.
If WA chooses to use two spinners at the SCG, left-arm wrist spinner Hamish McKenzie, who was added to their 13-man roster, may play with Corey Rocchiccioli.
Given how infrequently professional cricket players miss matches to attend weddings, Short’s absence is odd. He scored half-centuries in both innings of Victoria’s victory at the Gabba last week, so it is a setback for them.
Victoria remembered Mitch Perry and Jono Merlo in their place because Peter Siddle was also unavailable. Captain Will Sutherland is still out as he continues to heal from a severe side strain.
Tom Straker and Gurinder Sandhu are part of Queensland’s 12-man roster. Before Wednesday’s One-Day Cup victory over Tasmania in Hobart, Sandhu had not played at all this season due to a calf injury. Michael Neser is still out because of a hamstring injury, and Straker was rested after last week’s defeat to Victoria.
Fraser-McGurk is expected to be brought in by South Australia for his first Shield match of the summer against Tasmania in Hobart. Before his limited-overs duty with Australia, Fraser-McGurk played second-XI cricket for South Australia despite being available and not previously selected.
Jason Sangha, who moved from NSW to his new state, is also in the running to play in his maiden Shield match. After missing the previous game against Washington due to injury, Nathan McAndrew has also been picked and will take Johnson’s position. SA is looking into how serious his toe problem is right now.
Beau Webster has been called up to Australia’s Test squad; hence, Tasmania has called up Lawrence Neil-Smith for the match.
