How to Choose the Right Motorcycle Jacket

Motorcycle jackets are an iconic piece of clothing. But when it comes to riding motorcycles, it’s more than just fashion. Did you know that wearing the right motorcycle jacket can reduce your risk of injury by up to 63%?

That means it’s important to choose the right one. But how do you do that? Luckily, here are some tips to get you started.

    History of Motorcycle Jackets

Let’s start with a little history first, to help you understand the evolution of the jacket. The first motorcycle series was produced just before the turn of the 20th century. Then in 1928, a guy named Irving Schott invented the motorcycle jacket.

Their popularity really took off after the actor Marlon Brando was photographed wearing one in 1954. Then motorcycle jackets were actually banned in schools due to their association with dangerous hoodlums. Luckily, the jacket became even more popular as a symbol of the anti-establishment and is now an icon.

Things to Look for in a Jacket

Not all motorcycle jackets are equal. Some biker jackets are made to look fashionable, and some are made to function in the most extreme weather and conditions. But how do you tell them apart?

    Material

Start by taking a look at the material of the jacket. There’s a lot of debate about leather vs synthetic materials. Leather is more durable, more resistant to burns, but synthetic ones are easier to clean and can be waterproof.

If you choose leather, be sure to check the weight and thickness. Not all jackets will be the same, and obviously, the thicker the better. It should be at least 1mm thick, but 1.2 mm is preferable, and 1.4 mm or more is optimum.

    Fit

This may sound obvious, but make sure to choose a jacket that fits correctly. Don’t select a larger size to fit layers underneath. Make sure the zippers don’t strain and choose covered ones that offer more protection from the elements.

    Armor

For added protection, choose a jacket that has motorcycle body armor made of kevlar or carbon fiber. The armor should be at all potential contact points, like the back, elbows, and shoulders. When you put on your jacket, make sure that the armor stays in place when you move.

    Visibility

While an all-black jacket may look cool, make sure it at least has some reflective stripes for better visibility. If you really want to be safe, choose a bright color that other vehicles can see easily.

    Customize It

You don’t have to settle for uniform motorcycle gear—customize it! If you want to stand out from the pack, one way to do it is with motorcycle patches. You can use custom motorcycle patches for yourself, your club, or your group.

Ready to Find Your Perfect Jacket?

There’s no denying the cool-factor of a motorcycle jacket. But if you’re one of the millions of motorcycle owners out there, you need one that holds up to your “ride to live” lifestyle. The tips here should help you find the perfect one!
