Touchless Kiosks: Facial Recognition Technology for Airport Screening

Facial Recognition Technology for Airport Screening

Traveling is an activity that is done for both leisure and professional needs. Moving from one geographic location to the other is known as traveling. It is a billion-dollar industry that entails millions of customers annually. According to a report of the World Economic Forum, there will be 1.8 billion international arrivals by 2030.

Airports and airlines are the most essential part of the travel industry. Now people prefer air travel contrary to other means. The shipment industry is also using airplanes for delivery purposes. There has been a massive increase in the number of airports and airlines in recent years.

The onboarding process of airports has some problems addicted with it, discussed below:

  • The process is tedious and irritating
  • The passports screening method is old (does not comply with the modern technological advancements)
  • Passport checking is a manual process that often includes mistakes and errors
  • The data privacy is compromised
  • Airports face low-level customer satisfaction

Today customers demand robust and automated processes. Be it signing up for an online platform, opening a bank account, or purchasing something from e-commerce businesses, they do not accept a single delay. Airports have to modify their way of passenger screening for quick and convenient onboarding.

Facial Recognition Technology for Passenger Screening

The primary problem that airports face is scanning the huge number of employees at the same time. Dozens of planes land and hundreds of passengers arrive at the airport meanwhile. Using manual procedures is not a feasible option, it will raise the screening cost, take more time, and errors. As discussed earlier, the need for a digital solution is inevitable for airports and airlines in this era.

Here are some automated methods for passenger screening:

Digital Passport Screening

The process is also known as document verification, conducted by AI-powered software. The authenticity of the passport is checked and the data is validated in this process. Passport verification is a method in which it is confirmed that it is genuine and belongs to the same person who claims its ownership.

A traveler just has to place his passport in front of a scanner and the verification process will be performed on it. The MRZ code, holograms, and rainbow marks will be checked by the verification software. These are the signs of original and authentic documents that are issued by the government.

Touchless Kiosk

It is a technology that can screen dozens of passengers using facial recognition technology. The passenger just has to show his face and passport to the touchless kiosk. It will perform document verification on the passport and biometric recognition on the face. The photo on the passport will be confirmed with the live captured photo.

The technology is provided by identity verification solution (or KYC services) providers. KYC is an online process of validating someone’s identity by checking his identity documents. The same process is performed in touchless kiosks.

Being completely contactless, the technology follows the Covid-19 protocols. The passenger does not have to touch the scanner for verifying his identity and passport.

Other than the facial recognition system, the kiosks also use the below biometric authentication traits:

Palm Scanning

The hand geometry is checked in this step, also known as hand scanning or vein recognition. The passenger has to show his hand to the scanner, and it will extract the biometric data from it.

Palm scanning can be used as an additional security layer to the facial recognition system. It will enhance the security during passenger onboarding.

Voice Recognition

Among all other biometrics, voice recognition is considered a soft biometric authentication. Because it does not require a person to physically touch the scanner. The person just has to speak some words and the biometric scanner will capture it. Then the voice pitch, wavelength, frequency, and depth are marked.

Wrapping It Up

Airports and airlines will have to go for digital passenger verification solutions in near future. The touchless kiosk is the answer to all the traveler onboarding problems which can screen more effectively and quickly.
